How to Measure Your Dog for a Lift Harness or Support Sling
Canine MobilityA dog lift harness or support sling needs to fit both your dog and the way you plan to assist them. Before ordering, open the size chart for the exact model. Size labels are not standardized across different products: a medium harness and a medium sling may have very different dimensions.
Start with the type of support
Our Full Body Dog Lift Harness uses wraparound panels, leg openings, adjustable straps, and a padded handle. The Padded Dog Lift Support Sling Harness uses a soft-lined belly sling for hands-on assistance. Their coverage and measurement charts differ, so do not transfer a size choice from one to the other.
If you are choosing support for a diagnosed condition, an injury, or recovery, ask your veterinarian which type of assistance is appropriate before selecting a product.
Prepare a flexible tape measure
Keep your dog comfortable and supported while measuring. Do not force a position that causes pain or distress. If you cannot safely take a required measurement, ask for help rather than estimating.
Follow the measuring diagram on the product page. Keep the tape close to the body without pulling it tight. Measure each labeled area and write the results down in the same units used by the chart.
Match every measurement in the chart
For the full body harness, compare the waist and leg measurements shown for your chosen size. For a sling, compare the stated sling dimensions and adjustable strap range with your dog's body and your intended handling position. Use only the measurements supplied for that model.
Check whether a listed dimension describes the product laid flat or a circumference around your dog. These are different measurements. A fabric panel's width should not be read as a waist circumference unless the chart explicitly identifies it that way.
Do not choose by weight alone
Dogs of a similar weight can have different body shapes. Where suggested weights are provided, treat them as a secondary guide. The chart measurements and suitable coverage are more useful for checking fit.
If your dog's measurements do not fit the same size range, or the chart does not answer your question, contact us before ordering. Include the model name, your measurements, and the chart entry you are comparing. Do not assume that adjustable straps can compensate for every difference.
Check the fit before providing assistance
Follow the manufacturer's fitting instructions. Position panels and straps so they do not restrict circulation, movement, or toileting. Introduce the product under supervision and check for slipping, rubbing, or discomfort. Stop using it if it causes a problem.
A support handle does not, by itself, establish that a product is suitable for suspending your dog's full body weight. Follow the intended use and any stated limits for the model.
