Dog Ramp vs. Dog Stairs for Cars: How to Choose
Canine MobilityA dog car ramp and a set of dog stairs solve the same practical problem: helping your dog reach a suitable vehicle without jumping. The better choice depends on the setup and the way your dog moves. Start with the loading height, the space behind your vehicle, and the measurements of the product you are considering.
How the walking surface differs
A ramp provides a continuous slope. Stairs divide the climb into separate steps. Some dogs may be more comfortable with one layout than the other, so consider what your dog can use comfortably and ask your veterinarian for guidance if mobility is limited by an injury or joint condition.
Our Foldable Dog Car Ramp has a ribbed carpet-style walking surface, raised side rails, adjustable non-slip feet, and a safety tether. Our Foldable Dog Car Stairs have four textured steps, an adjustable extension, and a safety attachment strap.
Measure your vehicle first
Measure the height of the surface where the upper end will rest. Check that there is an appropriate contact area and enough clear ground behind the vehicle. A product that fits in your trunk when folded may still need more room than you have when extended.
For a ramp, the slope depends on both the ramp length and the loading height. At the same height, a longer ramp creates a gentler incline. Our ramp is available in approximately 63 × 17 in and 71 × 20 in sizes. Check the product page for the complete specifications before selecting a size.
For stairs, compare the normal and low-angle extension measurements with your vehicle. Do not assume that one extension setting will work with every loading height.
Use weight limits as one check
The ramp's advertised maximum load is 250 lb. The stairs' advertised maximum load is 150 lb. These figures do not confirm that a product suits every dog below that weight. Walking width, body size, stability, loading height, and your dog's ability to use the surface also matter.
Compare storage and handling
Check the folded dimensions against the space where you plan to store the product. Consider who will carry it and set it up. A folding design still needs to be positioned and secured correctly each time it is used.
Check the setup before every use
- Place the product on firm, level ground.
- Secure the upper contact area and attachment according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Check that the frame, hinges, walking surface, and contact points are sound.
- Keep the surface clean and avoid use when traction is compromised.
- Supervise your dog and guide them slowly.
